The three body problem by Cixin Liu was one of my major surprises this year. Didn't think a Chinese author would match up in the realm of sci fi but i was wrong. (Turns out he won a Hugo)
Originally written in mandarin and translated to English by Ken Liu, it's the first book of the trilogy which talks about how we humans would prepare for an invasion by aliens if we knew 450 years ahead of time. What would the aliens do to counter our technological advancement? How would we prepare?
Jam packed full of science it was well translated (even though the original in mandarin is probably a better read). Highly recommend.
